"Officials in Urbana are setting the stage for major redevelopment work in the next few years. The goal is to use the power of the city's existing historical structures to draw new tenants and business. A large focus is on revitalizing downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods, said John Bry, executive director of Main Street Urbana-Champaign County. ""The majority of our residents live in the center of the city."" About $5 million will be invested in the southwest quadrant of downtown to turn that area into an arts district. Urbana is working with a nonprofit group called ARTSpace, based in Minneapolis. As a result, 35 units will be created to serve as affordable housing and work spaces for artists and their families. Historic buildings will be renovated, and Bry said that will spark further development, such as cafes, galleries and other art-related businesses and buildings. ""This is (ARTSpace's) first project in Ohio. It will have a $12 million to $15 million economic impact,"" Bry said. Urbana also will work to create a regional retail center downtown by expanding the area with new structures that blend with the city's existing historical buildings."
